The Basics

video poker rulesPoker is a card game with 5 cards in each hand. The idea of the game is to bet based on the strength of your hand. The person with the strongest hand at the end of the game wins the round. Each player begins with 5 cards and has the option to swap cards during their turn in order to try and accumulate the strongest possible hand. Therefore, improving their chances of winning.
The term ‘poker face’ comes from the fact that in a game of poker you need to control your facial expressions in order to give away to your whether you have a good hand or not as they may increase or decrease their bets accordingly.

What is a good hand?

There are a range of combinations of cards that create different winning hands of cards. These are in a hierarchy meaning that the highest up on the list your combination of cards the better the hand. As an example, a Royal Flush is the best possible hand in poker and cannot be beaten.
Here are the usual hierarchy of cards in order from highest to lowest along with an explanation of each:

  • Royal Flush – This is the best possible hand in poker and cannot be beaten. It is incredibly rare to obtain a Royal Flush. This card combination is when you have the Ace, Jack, Queen, King and Number 10 cards in your hand.
  • Straight Flush – Is more common and beats everything other than a Royal Flush. This is when you hand contains five consecutive cards all of the same suit. For example, a 4,5,6,7,8  of a certain suit will make up a straight flush hand.
  • Four of a Kind – When you have four cards of the same value this is a four of a kind card and this hand beats everything except for a Royal or Straight Flush. For example, if you have 6 of hearts, 6 of spades, 6 of clubs and 6 of diamonds this is a four of a kind hand.
  • Full House – A full house is where your hand contains three cards of one value and two cards of another value. For example, three Kings and two three. Predictably, this beats any of the combinations below but is beaten by the combinations above.
  • Flush – A Flush hand is one that contains any five cards of the same suit. These cards do not need to be consecutive to be a Flush hand. For example, it could be an Ace,2,5,7 and 10 of Diamonds. This is a relatively easy hand to beat and therefore you are unlikely to bet large amounts of money on this hand unless you think your opponents all have worse card combinations.
  • Straight – Any five consecutive cards makes a Straight hand and these do not need to be of the same suit. For example, 3 of Spades, 4 of Hearts, 5 of Diamonds, 6 of Clubs, 7 of Spades would make a Straight hand.
  • Three of a Kind – As the name suggests this is a hand which contains three cards of the same value such as three Queen cards. It is easily beaten but as always this depends on the cards your opponents have got and it’s fun to try and guess on the basis of their betting size.
  • Two Pairs – Again, as the name suggests this is a hand which contains two pairs of the same value such as two Kings and two Fours.
  • Pair of Jacks or Better – If you have a pair of Aces or Face (Jack, Queen, King) cards this is the lowest possible winning combination of cards.

It should be stressed that there are different rules, hand combinations and hierarchies for different games of poker. The one detailed above is for one of the most popular poker games called Jacks or Better. Therefore, it is important that you check the rules of the individual game before playing. That said most of the video poker games will have some or all of these combinations including Royal Flush, Straight Flushes and the like. It also gives you a good idea of the principals involved in playing the game.
